Therapy is an invitation to meet yourself. Exactly as you are.

Depression & Anxiety

When depression and/or anxiety dominate your life, we begin by addressing your symptoms and practicing tools to improve daily functioning. The treatment is tailored to meet you where you are. Depression and anxiety are usually indicators of suppressed emotions or unresolved trauma. Depression is a state of hypo-arousal, in which the nervous system shuts down in response to threat whereas anxiety is a state of hyper-arousal in which the nervous system activates for protection. We will cultivate compassion for the part of you that is anxious or depressed and work towards identifying, experiencing, and expressing unresolved emotions so that your true self can fully emerge.

Healing Trauma

Trauma, stress, anxiety, and depression can manifest in myriad physical symptoms. You may feel trapped by your own physical and emotional states. Addressing thought patterns and emotions is important, however, research now shows that translating the wisdom of the body unlocks our potential to heal and transform. Using an integrated approach that incorporates mindfulness, somatic, and gestalt therapy, we work towards full presence and integration of body and mind.

Relationship Issues

Stephen Porges, an expert in the field of neurobiology, states that our longing is not simply to feel safe, but to feel safe in the arms of another. Learning to understand our need for connection and how your nervous system uniquely responds to disconnection is a powerful step in the healing process. Many of our patterns of protection are learned in our earliest relationships with caregivers. Combining attachment theory and practical tools, we will address the ways these old patterns may be inhibiting your current relationships. Together we will work towards creating healthier, more flexible, patterns of connection and protection.

How therapy works

Although cognitive understanding is a part of the therapeutic process, to interrupt entrenched patterns of being, we must address the feelings in the body. We have all learned many coping strategies to avoid uncomfortable or painful feelings. With attuned support, we can learn to tolerate and even befriend difficult feelings like sadness, anxiety, anger, or despair and allow them to move through our bodies naturally. I will encourage practicing new strategies or tools in the session including movement, role-playing, mindfulness, use of metaphor, and other creative practices. I also believe humor and play go a long way to ease our suffering and bring us back into connection.
